Gotta Have It: A Review

A big thanks to our guest blogger, Sophort Pauo, for this wonderful article!

Lowell, Ma -- As I walked into the 119 Gallery event the first thing that hit me was the music: a Christian guitar folk singer at a Cambodian new year event. Wrong building, perhaps? No. Once the models came out in traditional clothes it all made sense. The music was used as a backdrop for the fashion show and it worked so well I wondered why I ever doubted it. This is what the event was about. It's not just celebrating Cambodian New Year, it's celebrating being Cambodian American.

Throughout the night the event highlighted a good balance of traditional and modern. After the fashion show, the women of Angkor Dance troupe performed the traditional Fan Dance to ring in the New Year. Later, a charity organization speaker, spoke her piece trying to raise awareness about the depletion of Cambodia's most valuable resource: its culture. This was followed by another guest speaker, Rachel Faller, informing the crowd about her group's mission to use the art of silk production, among other things, to help the economy in Cambodia. The poetry readings bring the audience back to the past as Ricky Orng and Sophy Sam talk about the killing fields of Cambodia. This was a very emotionally intense performance and I know it choked up more than a few audience members. On a lighter note, the other poetry reading of the night was one woman's reminiscence of celebrating Cambodian New Years as a little girl. Set to the sound of live flute music of Rady Mom, the performance was both nostalgic and effective. The guys of Adams Project brought in the energy with a dance number all the while taking the opportunity to raise awareness on teen alcohol drinking.

Finally, the creators of Lowell's t-shirt line, F.O.B.'s Clothing, launched their new campaign video. The concept of FOB Clothing is simple: throw out the negative connotation of the term FOB and challenge people to think about what FOB means to them. There were some very creative answers (and hilarious moments) from the models interviewed in the video. FOB Clothing more or less sums up the night's event. Embrace the past, but look to the future. Capping off the night was another fashion number with the models wearing FOB t-shirts. They get extra points for using my favorite Cambodian song (Chhnam Oun 16) for the runway show. -- Sophort Pauo

Jim Higgins & Flying Orb Production

Although our main mission here at F.O.B. Clothing is to make sure you look as fly as freakin physically possible, we also take pride in our involvement in the community. Over the past few months of our brief existence, we've met many amazing people in the community whose missions are nothing short of inspiring! This segment of Fresh On The Blog will shed light on one such inspiring figure.

As a mentor of mine, I'm proud to give the spotlight to my dear friend James Higgins and his team of Lowell's finest talents: Flying Orb Production!

A fixture in the cultural revolution of this beautiful city of mills, Jim and the FOP crew has been making the city proud with some of the most innovative film technique around. His beautifully dark, atmospheric 45 mins film, Nether World, shot with a 35mm still camera, earned him and his crew numerous awards from film festivals -- ALL OVER THE WORLD!!

Aside from the film world, he's been a wonderful figure within the Lowell Khmer community. As a filmmaker, his pieces are often somber, thematic expressions of pressure, alienation, belonging, hope; Subtle, yet empathetic commentaries on the first and second generation Khmer experience (Transition is no smooth sailing). And all the while providing Khmer talents the rare venue to showcase their God(or Buddha for the religious conscious) given ability.

On April 15th, Mr. Higgins will be showcasing his work at the Khmer New year celebration event "Gotta Have It: Performance", at the 119 Gallery located in Lowell, Massachusetts. From F.O.B to F.O.P....KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, GUYS!!

A limited run of 250 pairs will be launched at Bodega and other global locations this Saturday April 3rd, 2010.

"GOTTA HAVE IT"- event at the 119th Gallery

Tuesday April 6 - Friday April 30 12noon-5pm, Free
Reception Thursday April 15 7-10pm

Works by Linda Saphan and Jim Higgins

Linda Saphan explores the lives of contemporary women in Cambodia. Saphan’s passion for art and her love of Khmer culture have made her one of the most prominent and encouraging voices in the Cambodian art scene. There’s a sense of anticipation, of women on the verge, communicated through subtle facial expressions throughout her work. You get the feeling that Gotta have it is a possibility, but filled with contradictions.

Jim Higgins‘ work, through his performance art company Flying Orb Productions, is about transformation among Cambodian/American women. For these women, breaking free means taking risks and Gotta have it is here and now! But while they represent the new wave of Khmer artists, they still struggle with the double lives they lead within their traditional culture.

Let there be LIGHT!

"Every syllable carefully crafted to match the pulsation of the heart
every letter curled pubic thought
spout new life into existence..."
recited FreeVerse! youth slam team member, Ricky Orng during Friday's S.L.A.M.(Sonnets Lighting A Match) event; An event curated by Lowell's first youth slam team, FreeVerse! and sponsored by The Revolving Museum. Humorous to most...and maybe even crude to some - those words epitomized everything that went on that night: The laughters, the tears, the techniques - and even that subtle glimpse of introspection, readily available to those willing to just - LISTEN.

The purpose of the event was to assemble a group of Lowell's best and brightest young poets to compete at the nationally renown slam festival: Brave New Voices, this summer in Los Angeles, California. Although everyone gave it their best, only five were chosen to represent the beautiful city of Lowell in L.A. Nonethless, everyone gave memorable performances. And why not? With pieces tackling on issues such as love, society, family and even the admiration of a certain body part(belonging to the male species lol), the event was just a glimpse of Lowell young talents and ultimately, it's cultural progress. And with local spoken-word veterans such as Masada Jones, Anthony Febo and Joey Banh at the helm, I think it's safe to say that...it's here to stay!

Congratulation to FreeVerse! and The Revolving Museum on a wonderful event! And an even bigger congratulations to the amazing youth that will be holding it down for the city at BNV, this summer!

congrats:

There's an article about F.O.B's Clothing.

This blog is manned by a close affiliate of mine whose mandate is to record the renaissance of cultural arts in Lowell, Massachusetts and sharing it with the world. Being one of the fashion interns at the Revolving Museum and a fashion scholar ( I would like to say ), I reached out for his assistance into producing the "PHOTOSHOOT." Evidently, you have to check out his blog as he gives you his personal take on all things fashion, art, and multimedia.
